Not everyone has been to a classical concert before, and it can be intimidating if you’re not sure what to expect. Seven Hills Symphony loves first time classical concert goers. To make it easier for first time or infrequent guests, we answered a few common questions below.

What Do I Wear?

We want you to be comfortable. Our concerts take place on Sunday afternoons, so most audience members are in casual clothing such as jeans but some prefer dress shirts or dresses, depending on the weather. The orchestra may be in suits and dress pants, but you do not need to be.

How Long is the Concert?

Our concerts are usually between 90 minutes to two hours, with an intermission of around 10 or 15 minutes.

When Do I Clap?

There is a bit of debate about this. When orchestra concerts were first introduced, the audience talked, ate, and clapped whenever they wanted to. Sort of like pop or rock concerts today. However, classical music audiences evolved over time in their thinking. At Seven Hills, we still ask that you please not talk or eat during the performance. While we love hearty applause at the conclusion of a piece of music, we are not purists and appreciate clapping between movements if so inspired.

What About My Phone?

We’ve all had our phones ring at the worst time. To ensure quiet parts of a concert aren’t one of those times, please silence or turn off your phones during the show. That being said, if you would like to take pictures or short video clips, feel free to do so. And tag us if they’re going up on social media! We’re on Facebook and Instagram (@7HillsSymphony).
